The Megalithic Culture in Great Briton

I had a trip by car to Cotswolds, where many English traditional villages are kept as they used to be. The scenery around there was very beautiful. Houses are built of stones. Therefore, it is very interesting to see that the color of each village is up to the color of stones quarried from its nearest mountain. Some villages are yellow, whereas the others are gray.

In my way home, I dropped in Avebury Stone Circle and Stonehenge. They are the remains of the Neolithic age about 5000 years ago. It is my great wonder how rulers at that time could make people work to build such big stone monuments. It is inferred that the remains are a consequent of two streams from East. One is the spread of agriculture from Near East. It seems that agriculture changed people’s life style from hunter-gatherer to settling farmer, made the differences greater between rich and poor, and thus between rulers and the ruled. The other is the spread of megalithic culture from Ancient Egypt. I think the big stone was used as the symbol of the power of rulers.

Regarding the villages in Cotswolds, I am not sure whether they are special in England, because I think there are many villages which are also very beautiful. However, Stonehenge and Stonecircle are worthy to see. they change not only your knowledge of human history but of your view of human nature.
